Course Title:
The Digital Darkroom: Mastering Photoshop & Lightroom Classic Duration: 9 Hours (Weekend Workshop)
Skill Level
Basic to Intermediate
Are your images stuck inside your camera?
Many photographers capture stunning data but struggle to translate it into a final image that reflects what they felt at the scene. The "Digital Darkroom" is not about "fixing" bad photos or creating fake realities; it is the essential second half of the photographic process. It is about realising the potential of the digital negative.
In this comprehensive weekend workshop, we will strip away the confusion of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom Classic. You will learn a professional, non-destructive workflow that prioritises image quality above all else. We will move from the fundamentals of RAW processing to advanced retouching and final competition preparation.
Who is this course for?
This workshop is designed specifically for Camera Club Members.
The Purist: You will learn how to process images faithfully, recovering shadow detail and highlight tone that the JPEG engine throws away.
The Competitor: You will learn the specific techniques required to remove distractions, guide the judge’s eye, and sharpen your images for Projected Digital Image (PDI) competitions.
What You Will Learn
Session 1: The Foundation & The Digital Negative
We begin by demystifying the interface and setting up a "fail-safe" workflow. You will learn why shooting RAW is non-negotiable and how to use Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and Levels to establish a perfect tonal base.
Key Skills: Customising the Workspace, Smart Object Workflow, Reading the Histogram, Global Tonal Correction.
Session 2: The Clean Up & Local Control
A dust spot or a stray branch can ruin a great image. In this session, we focus on "Cleaning" and "Sculpting." You will learn to remove distractions seamlessly and use light (Dodge and Burn) to guide the viewer’s eye to your subject—all without permanently altering your original pixels.
Key Skills: Layer Theory, The Spot Healing Brush vs Clone Stamp, Non-Destructive Dodge & Burn.
Session 3: Advanced Polish & Competition Output
The final touches separate the snapshots from the winners. We will harness Photoshop’s new AI masking tools to make targeted adjustments to skies and subjects. Finally, we will cover the "Dark Art" of sharpening and resizing to ensure your images look crisp and colourful on the club projector.
Key Skills: AI Masking (Select Subject/Sky), Content-Aware Fill, High Pass Sharpening, Resizing & sRGB Export logic.

"So well explained and finally, I understand how Importing and editing in Photoshop works."
“Lightroom Masks are brilliant. I struggled to get to grips with them and usually just edited in Photoshop. Now I can edit so much quicker using Lightroom.”
